What is in a banana?

Bananas are made up of about 75% water, with the rest consisting mainly of carbohydrates - starch, sucrose, glucose and fructose . The ratio of sugars changes as the fruit ripens - green bananas contain more starch, making them hard to digest, while yellow bananas contain more glucose and fructose, making them easier to digest and sweeter.

Due to their relatively high carbohydrate content, bananas are considered a calorie-dense fruit and are therefore avoided by people who are dieting. However, this is not necessary, as 1 medium banana only provides around 150 kcal . This fruit can therefore be a nutritious snack or a second breakfast. 

However, people with glucose intolerance or diabetes should be careful. Bananas have a medium glycaemic index, and in the case of these diseases, it is advisable to eat products with a low index, which do not cause a sharp rise in blood glucose levels.
