The most affected by constipation are those aged 65 or over. Why is this the case?

The most common cause is limited physical activity in people of this age. Every movement has a positive effect on intestinal peristalsis - so if this movement begins to run out, the intestines become lazy and therefore constipation can occur.

Therefore, if there are no health contraindications - it is worthwhile for older people to include short walks or some other physical activity in the agenda of the day. This will certainly have a positive impact on their health.

Unfortunately, constipation can also be a side effect of medication taken by older people. Unfortunately, it is at this age that man is forced to take quite a lot of different medicines. That is why it is always advisable to inform the doctor immediately about constipation problems - he or she will be able to determine the cause and possibly change the prescribed medication (or assist the intestinal function in an appropriate way).

It is worth remembering that when you talk to a doctor, you should list all the medications that such a person is taking - even if you think they should not cause side effects and are available without a prescription. It is the combination of different medicines that can have one and not another effect on the body.

How to prevent constipations?


The prevention of constipation in the elderly is very similar to that of others. A diet rich in fiber and proper hydration of the body is essential. Due to the fact that not all products rich in fibre are equally tolerated by older people - it is worth to bet on these more "milder" forms of fiber delivery, i. e. cooked vegetables and fruit, as well as compotes.
